Los Angeles is experiencing a historic decline in homicides, with 2024 on track to record the lowest homicide rate in 60 years. This dramatic reduction is largely attributed to strategic, community-focused programs like the Gang Reduction and Youth Development (GRYD) initiative. Since 2023, gang-related homicides in GRYD zones have dropped by 45%, showcasing the effectiveness of non-policing strategies in reducing violent crime.
The GRYD program, launched in 2007, targets specific neighborhoods plagued by gang violence. These intervention zones provide wraparound services including mentorship, conflict mediation, job training, and youth programs aimed at disrupting the cycle of violence. The program operates in 23 zones across Los Angeles, working with community-based organizations to reach at-risk individuals and families.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and city data, the overall homicide rate in 2024 is down by 14% compared to 2023. This includes a 19% drop in shooting victims and a significant decline in gang-related violence. GRYD zones saw not only a 45% decrease in gang-related homicides but also a 48% decline in shooting victims in those areas.
Mayor Karen Bass praised the progress, highlighting that investments in community outreach and violence prevention are producing measurable results. “True public safety comes from preventing violence before it starts,” she noted, emphasizing that funding community programs is as vital as traditional law enforcement.
Another key component of this success has been the deployment of intervention workers, also known as “peacekeepers.” These individuals, many of whom are formerly gang-involved, now serve as mediators who defuse potentially deadly conflicts before they escalate. Their presence on the streets, in schools, and at public events plays a critical role in maintaining peace.
Beyond GRYD, other city-wide statistics also reflect a broader improvement:
